Newton 2 - 1 Waverton

A highly competitive and entertaining game between two evenly matched teams.
Newton were fast out of the blocks and dominated the open minutes of the
game and forced a number of corners which were well defended with Olly make
some great blocks and Jamie secure in goal. Waverton soon got into their
stride and played some great passing football. James H and Mike failed to be
intimidated by some competitive defending and managed to link well for Mike
to put James H through to slot home the opening goal.

More chances followed but unfortunately Waverton could find the killer pass
or shot. Newton continued to press and after some good work scored a
deserved equaliser. The game continued to ebb and flow with both teams going
close. In the dying minutes of the first half Newton scored a controversial
goal. Jamie pulled off a great save to palm the ball onto the cross bar and
back down onto the goal line. Confusion ensued. Was it over or not?
Unfortunately for Waverton the goal line technology was not working today
and the goal was awarded. Elvey senior and junior took the decision hard.
Waverton continued to press and thought they were awarded a corner. After a
quickly taken corner they caught the Newton defence cold and slipped the
ball in for the equaliser. The referee had in fact given a goal kick to
Newton and the goal was cancelled out.

Waverton started the second half well. James A on for Rob made some great
tackles and passes linking well with Mike. As Waverton pushed for the
equaliser space was left in front of the defence and Newton tried to exploit
the space. Will and Olly defended brilliantly and on the odd occasion they
did break through the defence Jamie was in the form of his life and pulled
off two of his best saves of the season.

Rob replaced James H who went down injured. The game opened up as both teams
pressed for another goal.Adam went close with a long range free kick.
Waverton pressed for the equaliser and were awarded a corner which Mike
swung in from the right. Rob had an good attempt on goal but the ball broke
to Newton who passed quickly forward. Newton were 4 on 2 and a goal seemed
inevitable. James A have sprinted back 50 yards managed to dive in with a
last ditch tackle which would have graced any Premiership game. The final
whistle went and it was not to be Waverton's day. Losing to a very good
Newton side was no disgrace. Every player gave 110% today and were a credit
to Waverton.

Jamie was MOM amd James A was team player. Well done lads.
