than expected. The Hornets were very slow out of the blocks and seemed
contant in the knowledge that they had already beaten Castrol
convincingly. In the early stages the Hornets lacked real conviction in the
tackle and any decent passing and movement was in short supply. Castrol were
more committed in the early stages and only some robust challenges from Will
early on prevented any meaningful Castrol attacks on goal.
In the latter stages of the first half play improved with good runs by Rob
and James A but the final ball was not up to the usual standard. The best
moment of the first half produced some great interplay between Mike and Rob
only for the finish to be off target. James H pressed into action as reserve
goalie dived in bravely at the feet of a Castrol attacker to prevent a
possible goal.
The Hornets raised their game in the second half. Adam began to run the
midfield and the movement with James H now playing upfront with Mike
certainly improved the shape of the team. Some good passing provided the
ball out wide to Rob who managed to squeeze his cross/shot into the far
corner to give the Hornets the lead. All the work on the training ground
nearly paid off when Will met a corner from Mike only to see it headed off
the goal line. The Hornets continued to play well but missed two open goals
and another hatful of chances.
Castrol never gave up and forced a corner. The ball was swung in from the
right and poor defending by all enabled the Castrol forward to poke the ball
home for the equaliser.
The Hornets continued to press and had at least two more clear cut chances
to score but somehow Mike and James H managed to shoot wide when it seemed
odds on that they were going to score. In the dying minutes Castrol broke
away and only a fantastic tackle from Adam saved the day. Not our best
performance by a long way.
