and skilful Newton side. Despite a delayed start and the cold conditions the
Hornets were for once quickly out of the blocks. In the second minute James
H seized on a loose ball and fired home from close range for an early lead.
The Hornets enjoyed the greater possession in the first quarter but
squandered some good positions with some poor final passing. Newton began to
play some good football and their general passing and distribution of the
ball was more accurate. Newton created some good chances and Jamie had to be
at his best to deny Newton an equaliser.
A Newton corner just before half time created the usual havoc in the Hornets
penalty area. Despite the ball being cleared off the line by Will the ball
broke straight to a Newton forward who scored with ease. A case of poor team
defending and more ball watching. Set piece defending has been a problem all
season. In the past heads may have gone down but it was great credit to the
boys that they bounced back so well.
The second half got off top a great start. The passing in midfield had a lot
more purpose and some good play between James A, Rob and Adam set up Mike
for a spectacular finish. A stunning shot from outside the area looped over
the Newton keeper and into the top corner. Newton did not give up and as the
half progressed created some great chances. Excellent defending by Olly,
Will and Dan stifled many attack and when Newton did manage to break clear
they could find no way past Jamie who was outstanding all game.
In the final quarter Mike played a superb pass through to James H who coolly
fired home to give a 3-1 lead. Newton to their credit never gave up and on
another day the result may have gone the other way.
MOM Jamie
TP Mike
